good morning. an early morning fire at a landmark bakery in the east bay. ktvu news has exclusive video of this fast moving fire. firefighters go running for cover at this oakland fire station as bullets come through their windows. we'll let you hear from them as they describe the terrifying ordeal. and we're live in santa clara where we may find out what the new name of the 49ers stadium will be. we'll tell you who the front runner is. three women found alive ten years after they were kidnapped. the tough questions tied to this stunning story. ktvu channel 2 news continues.

good morning. thank you for joining us, wednesday, may 8th i'm pam cook. >> good morning, i'm dave clark. you said it was going to be tricky to figure out how to dress. >> it is a little cooler but it will be nice this afternoon. that is correct. maybe layers here. a little more chill in the morning air. temperatures have dipped into the low 50s. still under cloudy to mostly cloudy skies. it will be in the 50s to low 60s. not a bad drive at all. it's a little crowded. when you do get to the toll plaza you will see more traffic. 6:01 let's go back to the desk. we are still following developing news from oakland. firefighters investigating the cause of a fire at the well known merritt bakery. this was reported at 2:45 this

morning. it took 45 minutes to put out the flames. the battalion chief says the fire started on the first floor and then it spread. he also says some kind of plastic was burning and that made the smoke toxic. >> it was thick black smoke. >> reporter: describe what could have been burning. >> some type of plastic. some kind of petroleum products. something of that nature. at that point everybody is on oxygen. >> >> this was not the first fire there. we'll tell you more about that and other challenges firefighters face. that is coming up at 6:30. oakland police are searching for a shooter that gunned down a man and sent firefighters running. claudine wong is outside the station where damage from the shooting has been covered up. >> reporter: ground pam. we're at 50th and ban crowd. plastic now over one of the bay

windows here. that glass that used to be there was shattered by a stray bullet and there is another windowed in in the station that was also happened. several firefighters were inside when it happened. let me show you where it started. you are taking a look evidence of the gunfire that ended uptaking the life of one man at 9:00 last night. firefighters heard those shots at their station a few blocks away. eight of them were inside the building. they had just come back from another call, were putting away their fear, cleaning their rig -- their gear, cleaning their rig when they heard glass chartering. >> it was ten seconds from moving away. and they started to dive. they heard the shots and they were not alarmed but then it got louder and then they dove.

>> reporter: fortunately -- fortunately no firefighter was hurt. they were tweeting out captions saying where did that bullet come from? and stay safe out here. firefighters say the old station that was here was also hit. but they continue to work as usual and say today things will be business as usual because the battalion police says we are here to serve. live in oakland claudine wong. three brothers arrested at a house where three missing women were found are expected to be interviewed by police. amanda berry, tina dejesus, and knight were found alive. since then the fbi and investigators have been combing through the house. the three women were teenagers when they were kidnapped between the ages of 2002 and 2004. the family of the men arrested say they are still waiting for answers. >> there is two ways to be sorry.

i'm happy because the girls were found. and i'm sorry because the damage was done by a member of my family. >> reporter: cleveland police officers are also facing questions about how they handled the case. neighbors say they made multiple reports about seeing strange things at the house. police never entered the home to investigate. coming up at 6:22 we will go live to cleveland for more. we continue our coverage of the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge saturday night. criticism is growing as the flames engulf the limo. several survivors and relatives of those who die told the chronicle the driver was slow to react. and he did little to help the women as they tried to escape the flames. but brown said he did everything possible to help and feels terrible at the fire. in the meantime the coroner released the names of all five women who died in that limo.

conference in san francisco today. for months there has been speculation that levi strauss company is the front runner. the rumors have been fueled by reports that the company obtained do main rights to levi field and levi stadium. >> possibility of having a long- term company that has been part of california for many, many years. it's a great opportunity. >> the new stadium is slated to open in 2014. money generated from the naming rights deal will help finance the cost of the facility. happening now in brisbane bay shore boulevard is back open after an early morning crash involving a big rig. brian flores is there now. what is happening, brian? >> reporter: that is definitely good news that bay shore boulevard is open this morning. take a look behind me that is

pulling a big rig cab. look how far it fell. it was trying to avoid an early this morning. let's go to video that was shot a time ago. the driver of the either didn't see the big rig and made a wider than usual turn. the big rig driver tried to avoid the suv. both drivers have minor injuries. the driver of a big rig was taken to a nearby hospital. the tow truck came here probably an hour ago. it's going to be pulling this big rig cab. luckily there was nothing attached to it. but again both drivers have

welcome back. time now 6:15. it's a statistic no city wants. the city of oakland is the new robbery capitol of america. according to a new fbi report oakland reported more than 4300 robberies last year. more than any other city in the country. oakland mayor jean quan says that is unacceptable. william bradley is expected to release his recommendations on how to deal with the problem this week. meantime police in pleasanton hope new surveillance pictures will help them lead to an arrest of a bank robber. investigators released these photos of that suspect. take a look. they say he robbed the chase bank yesterday morning about 9:00 a.m.. now no one was hurt in that robbery.

it's still not clear how much money was taken. a state department whistle blower will testify in front of a congressional panel about the benghazi attacks that killed a u.s. ambassador and three other americans. jacqueline fell is in our washington, d.c. newsroom. jacqueline. >> reporter: pam, house republicans tell me today's tom will show president barack obama and hillary clinton former secretary of state did not do all they could to stop the attacks in benghazi libya on september 11th. testimony today from gregory hicks will say a team of u.s. special forces was ready to head to benghazi after the first attack but was told to stand down after that attack on the pentagon. his testimony will show from the get go this was a terrorist attack and he told the white house, the state department, and anyone else that would listen. >> why does it matter?

welcome back to the ktvu channel 2 morning news. police in cleveland, ohio are facing questions about how they handle missing person cases after the discovery of those three women missing for over ten years. tory dunnan is live in cleveland. good morning, tory. >> reporter: good morning, pam. things have started to get moving today. the investigation continues. we're told what police will be doing is securing the scene and they will also take a look at where we stand right now. take a look at all the evidence

and decide where to go from here. all of this is coming at the same time as the three women are being reunited with family. amanda berry's grandmother waited ten years for this phone call. >> hello. >> amanda. >> yeah grandma. >> how are you? >> i'm fine. >> i thought you were gone. >> nope i'm here. >> reporter: the last time they talked berry was 16 but on monday she escaped from a cleveland home with the help of a neighbor and made a desperate call to police. for the family heart ache over in an instant. >> if you don't believe in mer cans i suggest you think again. >> reporter: amanda berry, gina dejesus, and knight disappeared between 2002 and 2004. they were found on monday in a home three miles away. family members of one of the

women said berry and dejesus were in good condition but knight was weak and thin. now three brothers are behind bars awaiting charges. police say they never received any tips regarding the women in the house but neighbors are left to wonder how signs went unnoticed. reports of a naked woman spotted in the backyard yelling. suspect ariel castro seen with a little girl. >> those are the little things that we overlook. it breaks my heart. >> reporter: the fbi is investigating the case as the three women and their families begin to heal. and pam, charges have yet to be filed, but we are told by the police chief you can expect that to happen later today and there will be a news conference. >> reporter tory dunnan live from cleveland, thank you. time now 6:27. jc dugard the woman held captive for 18 years is talking about the discovery of those three women in cleveland.

good morning, to you. welcome back. thank you for joining us here on ktvu channel 2 morning news. middle of the week. wednesday, may 8th i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. developing news. a landmark bakery is destroyed from a fire. >> reporter: the general manager of merritts restaurant and bakery arrived here in the past hour. she's been trying to get ahold of the owner to figure out how this will effect business. you can see behind me here the landmark sign. merritt has received many from the city to keep the doors

open. a lot of people are wondering if this fire will put them over the financial edge. this is exclusive video of the fire around 3:00 this morning. the 911 call coming in about 15 minutes before we arrived. 32 firefighters were able to knock out the flames within 45 minutes and then she told us merritts will most likely be closed until it's deemed safe by the health department. that is because of the heavy toxic smoke. and she says one of the biggest challenges was tackling flames in such a large building. >> we have to make sure you have accountability for all of your crews to make sure they stay together and nobody gets lost in the building this size. >> reporter: an inside tour of the building shows heavy damage. this is a very popular landmark restaurant located just across the street from lake merritt. it's been dishing out pies and cakes for more than 50 years.

the fire investigator is on scene trying to figure out how this started. no word yet on how much this will cost to fix. now workers have been arriving this morning just shaking their heads wondering exactly what will they do now? live from oakland i'm tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. time is 6:32. police in berkeley investigating a crash that seriously injured a pedestrian. it happened at tenth and university. police say a driver and a small sedan hit the man at 8:20 last night. investigators are not sure if the injured pedestrian was in a crosswalk at the time. police do say the driver did stop and cooperating with investigators. we now continue our coverage of the deadly limo fire on the san mateo bridge. we are now hearing the radio communicators. it's clear that everyone knew immediately they were dealing with a very serious situation.

>> the limo caught fire on the far western end of the san mateo bridge which made it difficult for first responders to get there quickly. we also have video from the philippines showing the mother of neriza fojas looking at photos on her daughter. her daughter planned to celebrate her wedding with her family in the philippines next month. there is both grief and anger among family members of the victim living here. >> there is anger that we are feeling but we don't know what

that is. we don't know -- we don't understand how this could happen. is somebody responsible for what had happened? all of those we would have to wait. >> mow that is the brother-in- law of anna alcantara the san lorenzo woman who died in the fire. springtime one of the busiest times of year for limo services. the tragedy on the san mateo bridge is now giving many people second thoughts about riding in a limo. we're going to hear from concerned bay area parents about prom coming up at 6:45. time now 6:35. very heavy traffic expected in the napa area in the coming days. but bottle rock music festival is is getting under way. now tonight there is a festival preview with only a couple of the acts. the bigger crowds are expected tomorrow through sunday when the festival officially kicks off. the four-day event will feature 50 bands playing from noon

until 10:30 at night. the concert could effect traffic on interstate 80, highways 12 and 21 and other roads leaving in and out of the napa valley expo. highway patrol will have 40 of their officers directing traffic. motels are also booked up with people planning to go to the concerts. >> it is going to be very busy up there. 6:36. >> what do you say this weekend we drive up to the wineries. drive around. >> i was thinking about it. >> yeah sounds good. let's take a look at the commute mow. i'm glad we are warning people by the way. in all seriousness about the traffic expectations up there. this is a look at 80. i would say today is not a bad day. i would say it's a 15 minute delay here. so we are looking very normal.

warmup on thursday. >> thank you, steve. ktvu news has learned the 49ers plan a big announcement today about the name of the team's new stadium. janine de la vega joins us now from the future home of the 49ers. >> reporter: i haven't been to this site in the last couple of months but now that i'm here it's really impressive. so what will it be named? sources tell us it may be named after a blue jeans company. ktvu has learned the 49ers are expected to hold a news conference in san francisco later today to discuss a naming rights deal. a new name for the stadium may also be announced. the 49ers and santa clara officials won't kiss 'cuz the announcement -- officials won't discuss the announcement. but there are rumors that levi strauss is the front runner.

off the sierra nevada into the sacramento valley. light rain. not only that we have low clouds and a westerly breeze. mostly cloudy today. a little cool. welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we are following for you at 6:44. this morning whistle blowers in the state department they are due to testify. in fact, they should be at the testimony table now on the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi libya. the whistle blowers accused government november not responding appropriately to that attack. an investigation in oakland goes on into an early morning fire that happened at merritt bakery. it started at 2:45 this morning. took about 45 minutes to put the flames out. now five years ago there was another fire at merritt bakery. it was sparked by faulty wiring. later this morning bay bridge officials are expected to tell us about fixing those broken bolts on the new eastern span on the bay bridge. we're also expected to find out

if the bridge will open in time for labor day as scheduled. fear inside an oakland fire station as a stray bullet went right through the fire house last fight. ktvu claudine wong is at engine station 18 where nearby gunfire killed a guy on the street and damaged the fire house. >> reporter: we are inside the fire house. we can show you where the bullet first came in. this is a broken window. they cleared out the shattered glass. i want to introduce you to battaliochief to take us through what happened. tell me where everyone was. >> reporter: the firefighters just pulled in with the truck company here after a false alarm commercial alarm anethene standing by the bench where you see the turnouts. and then they walked around. they heard the shots and walked around the engine here and when they heard the larger gunshots and the windows shattered they ducked underneath the fire

engine. >> reporter: walk us through where everyone was standing. you said you have a fairly tall firefighter standing right here when it happened? >> no, had he been standing here it would have been hitting him in the head. >> reporter: you said you had the people with had just passed through here and we walk around the fire trucks here because i want to show you where there was other folks. >> there was an engineer working on fire engine. he dove here. >> reporter: and everyone else went through this door here. >> yes. >> reporter: and it's so scary you talk about when you hear bullets here before it's not like you haven't heard them before but coming this close and the folks in here just trying to do a job what is going through your mind as far as the people and keeping them safe? >> first of all getting out of the way and ducking down and doing what they can to make sure everyone is okay once it's over. that's the issue trying to

own burial plots say they will not accept this. they say tsarnaev should not be buried on american soil. new developments. investigators say they have arrested 31 people in connection with one of the largest diamond heists in recent history. suspects are accused of dressing up as police officers and stealing $50 million worth of diamonds from a plane at the brussels airport back in february. the arrests were made in three countries belgium, france, and switzerland. time is 6:49. this is one of the busiest time of the year for limousine services. there is a huge demand for limos for springtime weddings, graduations, and high school proms. but the deadly limo fire over the san mateo bridge is raising new safety concerns over bay area high school students and their parents.
